Available under $100, the Nesco FD-75A Snackmaster Pro is among the most affordable products on the market. A perfect starter machine for anyone who’s not familiar with dehydrators, the FD-75A is recommended to anyone who wants to experience the numerous benefits of food dehydration without having to bust their budget. Indeed, according to experts, food dehydration can largely contribute to weight-loss by encouraging you to swap crisps and chocolates for delicious pieces of dried fruits and vegetables. Similarly, drying your own produce will help you avoid the toxins and chemicals added in commercial products- something that Nesco strives to reinforce through this particular machine. More importantly, this machine is a foolproof way to encourage your kids to increasing their consumption of fruits and vegetables.
While the Nesco FD-75A is not exactly among the top-range models, it does its job and is perfectly suited to anyone who isn’t willing to spend a fortune on a dehydrator. This particular machine is also recommended to people who plan on using it from time to time because it’s not really built to sustain heavy-duty use.
On the flip side, however, the dehydrator does not include a timer, which can be an issue if you’re too busy to keep an occasional eye out on the machine. Still, judging by its surprisingly affordable price, it can be worth it to invest in this appliance and buy a regular inexpensive kitchen timer on the side. This model is made of plastic and is available in gray and is protected by a manufacturer’s warranty of 1 year and has a wattage of 600 watts.
Heat Distribution: 4/5
Since this appliance comes with a top-mounted fan, it generates a vertical flow. Therefore, any food placed on the top tray will dry in quite a short amount of time, something which busy users are undoubtedly going to appreciate. In fact, some users have found that it only took them around 3 to 4 hours to dry produce like pears and apples and around 1 to 2 hours for herbs.
On the bright side, the top-mounted fan does certainly make the Snackmaster Pro a breeze to clean, unlike its bottom-mounted fan counterparts. However, because of the airflow system, the dehydrating process can be uneven between trays, thus users might have to rotate trays in order to get their food evenly dry.
With an expandable feature, this particular appliance comes with 5 trays which means that you can very easily dry quite a lot of food in one batch. Even better, users can even add 7 additional trays to the appliance- something that can be quite handy for large gatherings. Because of the expandable feature, the appliance does not require a lot of counter space, making it perfect for smaller kitchens.
Other Features: 3.5/5
Unlike vertical air flows, the horizontal heat distribution system in this machine ensures even drying across every single tray. Therefore, you won’t have to constantly open the lid and check on your food- something that can cause you to lose quite a large amount of the heat accumulated in the appliance, and this also prevents the flavors from mixing.
Although the Nesco FD-75A doesn’t come with a timer, users will be glad to learn that, unlike the Presto 06300, this model does come with a thermostat which provides greater precision over your cooking. This also helps you decide how soft or crunchy you want your dried fruits and vegetables to be. In fact, the thermostat provides quite a great deal of flexibility and ranges between 95 to 160 degrees Fahrenheit. More importantly, the Snackmaster hardly emits any noise which is quite a welcomed change from most other dehydrators.
This appliance includes additional amenities such as two mesh sheets, two solid sheets, and several jerky spice packets. Users will also receive fruit roll sheets as well as Clean-A-Screen flexible screens that can be used to dry items such as potpourri, herbs and various spices. An instructions manual as well as a recipe book are also included in the boxed packaging. Best of all, the included roll sheets can be used for a plethora of other semi-liquid products such as sauces, soups and fruit leather. Some customers successful managed to dry pasta and milk powder using these additional amenities.
Sadly, the Snackmaster Pro doesn’t come with an on/off switch, thus you’ll have to unplug it in order to turn it off. Lastly, the trays are not dishwasher safe, which can be a problem for some people.
Overall Rating: 4/5
All in all, because of its affordable price range, capacity, and temperature control, this dehydrator provides excellent value for money. Inexpensive enough to be easily procured by anyone on a limited budget, this appliance is also suited for beginners or to anyone who doesn’t plan on using it on a daily basis. However, if you want something that can withstand quite a lot of wear and tear from constant, heavy-duty use, you might want to go for a more professional model such as the Nesco American Harvest FD-1018P instead.
